Response to our first release of Bayo Oscuro Syrah in 2003 has reinforced my commitment to the cool climate-style of Syrah that we grow in Casablanca. 2004 was a tricky season, and the Syrah struggled to ripen. We thinned the crop down severely as it became clear that the season was going to be late, and it barely made it in under the wire. But we did make it in mid May. We truly lived on the edge with the Syrah in 2004.

The 2004 version of the Bayo is a bit more austere than the 2003. The flavors run more towards the wild, gamey, spicy end of the spectrum, with the berryish fruit a backup player. On the palate, the wine is surprisingly approachable, with just a little grip and a touch less acid than the 2003. The 2004 Bayo Oscuro is intense and a little edgy—give it some air before you drink it and it will open up nicely.
